When Forbes invited me to talk about neurodivergence, I named the core problem I see: many of us are running our own OS and the workplace OS at the same time, inside systems that were designed for a very specific average person. I called it a “parallel operating system” because it was the clearest way I could explain what it feels like. It’s a constant background load: brilliant people holding two identities so they can function as best they can in spaces that say they want innovation while quietly standardizing everything. It’s exhausting, but for now, it’s the price of success for minds like ours.

The Neuroinclusive Economy is my answer to that. It’s the framework I created to help leaders, communities, and organizations treat cognitive diversity as a core economic resource, not a side quest in HR or a box‑checking DEI requirement. (For the record, I’m a big fan of DEI when it’s understood and done well.) In this model, I’m not just advocating for individual accommodations; I’m arguing for rebuilding the underlying infrastructure so people don’t have to run two realities at once, all day, every day.

What I mean by a “neuroinclusive economy”

At its core, the Neuroinclusive Economy is an economic framework that recognizes cognitive diversity as a fundamental driver of innovation, sustainability, and more equitable prosperity. Instead of assuming one default way of thinking, it deliberately weaves different processing styles—autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, gifted, neurotypical and more—into how we design value creation, distribution, and exchange.

I work with four core principles when I’m building or recalibrating systems:


1. Cognitive diversity as real economic resource

I see different neurological processing styles as complementary assets, not deviations to be corrected. When we intentionally integrate those differences into problem‑solving and design, we get systems that spot patterns earlier, generate more original solutions, and hold up better under pressure.

I call this Cognitive Capital: the measurable economic value that emerges when we stop wasting energy forcing everyone through one narrow way of working. ND leaders know this instinctively—they’ve been doing unpaid translation between operating systems for years; I simply name it and help organizations invest in it on purpose.


2. Community‑centered value creation

I’ve watched neurodivergent people light up in the right containers and shut down in the wrong ones. In communities like St. Pete Girl Boss, I’ve seen what happens when you design for belonging as infrastructure: people make more money, take more risks, and stay in the game longer. They want to show up, they want to be vulnerable, and psychological safety– the number one driver for successful teams– is created with ease.

That’s why the Neuroinclusive Economy prioritizes collaborative, community‑based value creation over purely individualistic competition. I use the term Collaborative Advantage to describe the multiplier effect that shows up when you build shared infrastructure—spaces, norms, tools—that intentionally connect different cognitive styles instead of isolating them. We build connection and understanding and people naturally become more collaborative.


3. Systems‑based resource allocation

Most systems are built around one “most efficient” pathway: one way to apply, one way to show up, one way to communicate, one way to be a “good” leader or employee. If your brain doesn’t match that pathway, you pay a tax in time, energy, and dignity. In classroom spaces, we account for that. In adult-centered spaces, it’s fit in or leave. That’s a problem.

In a neuroinclusive economy, I design flexible, multi‑pathway systems. There are multiple ways to access resources, contribute, and succeed that don’t punish non‑dominant brains, and in fact, benefits everyone. I call this Accessible Opportunity: creating systems with many entry points and success routes instead of standardized funnels that quietly filter out certain types of thinkers. These thinkers are often the ones with the most creative approaches, most precise methods, and the most dedication and focus, when given the right environment and tools.


4. Adaptive valuation mechanisms

Traditional metrics miss a lot of the value neurodivergent people bring: risk sensing, pattern detection, deep focus, connective thinking, relentless iteration. If you don’t measure those contributions, you don’t design for them (and you absolutely don’t reward them). Again, I am sure you can see the problem.

So part of my work is widening the lens. I use Multi‑Dimensional Value Assessment to talk about ways of measuring impact that include traditional outcomes and the less visible contributions that keep systems innovative, safe, and human. When we change what we count, we change what we build.


The Neuroinclusive Economy in real life

Here’s how these principles show up when I’m working with leaders, teams, and communities.

Neuroinclusive business ecosystems

Organizations need to move from “we accommodate” to “we are designed for cognitive diversity at the operating‑system level.” That can look like:

  • Multi‑modal communication (written, visual, async, live) as the default, not the exception.
  • Flexible work structures with crystal‑clear expectations and predictability.
  • Sensory‑aware environments and workflows that reduce unnecessary nervous‑system load.
  • Recognition and reward systems that notice more than loud, fast, and extroverted.
  • Leadership practices that adapt to different thinking and communication styles instead of forcing everyone into one mold.

Community economic catalysts

On the community side, I build and support structures that turn “I am not feeling this at all” into “Oh, I belong here. I get this.” Practically, that means:

  • Facilitated networking that bridges communication differences instead of favoring one style.
  • Resource‑sharing platforms that are actually usable by brains with different processing needs.
  • Knowledge‑exchange systems that honor multiple learning styles—written, spoken, visual, experiential.
  • Collaborative spaces—online and in‑person—designed with neuroinclusive principles in mind.

Neuroinclusive marketplaces

When I talk about neuroinclusive marketplaces, I’m asking: can real people (like actual folx) with different operating systems access and navigate this space effectively without paying for it in energy, comfort, etc.? That looks like:

  • Information presented in multiple formats and channels.
  • Sensory‑considerate digital and physical environments that don’t overload people.
  • Transaction processes with more than one valid route through—so if one pathway jams your brain, there’s another way.
  • Feedback mechanisms that work for varied communication styles, not just “speak up in a meeting.”

Policy and infrastructure

At the macro level, I’m interested in economic systems that treat neurodiversity as a growth driver, not a compliance box, but don’t exploit it by pretending there isn’t a cost for minds like his. That includes:

  • Education systems that identify and grow diverse cognitive talents instead of sanding them down.
  • Funding and grant mechanisms that are accessible to different communication styles.
  • Regulatory frameworks that explicitly guard against neurological discrimination.
  • Physical and digital infrastructure grounded in universal design so fewer people are left outside the door.

The inevitable outcomes

This isn’t “inclusion as a nice‑to‑have.” It’s an economic strategy. But, it’s one that needs to be handled with care, as most things that involve human capital. If done well, you’ll see:

  • Innovation acceleration – when you put multiple operating systems in the room and design for them well, you get more novel solutions, better pattern recognition, and more breakthrough ideas.
  • Sustainability enhancement – different processing styles see different risks and long‑term implications, which leads to more robust plans and fewer unintended consequences.
  • Inclusion dividend – when you stop wasting and sidelining cognitive resources, total productivity and opportunity expand while inequality shrinks.
  • Resilience multiplier – systems built for cognitive variety adapt faster because they can generate multiple response strategies under pressure. Psychological safety keeps people coming back even when things feel difficult.

This is the through‑line in my work, from talking about parallel operating systems in Forbes to community building to helping leaders redesign their cultures and communities. It looks different in different contexts, but the benefit remains the same: novel thinking, community connection, and sustainable maintenance of the human spirit.


How this model shifts the “same old story”

Most traditional economic thinking assumes:

  • One standardized “most efficient” path (we all know that is baloney).
  • Competition as the primary engine of value.
  • Neurodivergence as a deficit that needs accommodation (although accommodations are needed, it’s not the primary focus)
  • Homogeneity as operationally better and simpler.

The Neuroinclusive Economy model flips those assumptions:

  • From standardization to flexibility – multiple valid pathways, by design.
  • From competition only to collaboration + competition – especially when collaboration lets you leverage different brains together.
  • From deficit to asset – when managed well, neurodivergence as a valuable cognitive resource.
  • From homogeneity to diversity – cognitive diversity as a strategic advantage, not an obstacle.

I’m not here to tear down every traditional framework. I’m here to expand them so we stop leaving real innovation and momentum—(and honestly, people)—out in the cold. When we design economies, organizations, and communities that are built for how human minds and nervous systems function, neurodivergent people don’t just survive the system; we reshape it. We don’t have to constantly run parallel operating systems, and we can focus, relax, innovate, and contribute in ways we can’t often do so now.
